Reading Matters intensive reading programme
Volunteer reading coaches are needed to help young people in custody and the community to improve their literacy skills using the Reading Matters programme.
Reading Matters is part of the PLUS numeracy and literacy strategy. It is an intensive reading programme for young people aged 10–18, whose reading age is below their actual age, or who have not developed an interest or enjoyment in reading.
Reading Matters uses three strands to develop reading skills and encourage interest in books and other texts so that learners can learn to read for enjoyment. All learning is done in a supported environment where young people work on a daily basis with their own personal coach.
Coaches give a fixed amount of time each day to help young people with the programme. They are provided with full training, support and a resource pack of strategies, tools and suitable recommended texts by their local Reading Matters co-ordinator.
If you would like to volunteer to be a coach or have any questions, contact the PLUS team on 020 7304 7072 or email plusinformation@ecotec.co.uk.
