Appropriate adult case study: Katie's story
Katie has been working as an appropriate adult since 2002.
“I saw an advert for the scheme in the local paper. I went on a training course, an evening a week over eight weeks,” says Katie. “I do enjoy the role – although you can be in there for quite a while, sometimes several hours.”
“The appropriate adult can have a positive effect on what happens to a young person on arrest,” Katie continues. “I was with one boy who hadn’t been in trouble before and was frightened so refused to give his name and address, believing that the police would let him go as a result. In fact, they were just going to keep him in until court. It took two hours to get his details – by playing hangman to guess his name and negotiating with the police to return his Spiderman comic, which I promised him in return for his address.”
