Through its workforce development strategy, the YJB will provide a structure of accredited training, relevant to practitioners from a variety of different backgrounds working in YOTs and in the secure estate.
The YJB's National Qualifications Framework provides youth justice services with a range of staff training and development tools to promote effective practice. The centrepiece of the framework is the Professional Certificate in Effective Practice (Youth Justice), a higher education qualification developed and delivered by the Open University.
Short effective practice in-service training (INSET) courses have been developed in each effective practice area including education, training and employment.
Through PLUS, the YJB has developed a new qualification for learning support assistants – the Professional Certificate in Effective Practice (Learning Support).
The Professional Certificate will count as credit towards the achievement of the Youth Justice Foundation Degree.

An introduction to youth justice
The Open University [link opens in new window] has developed 'Exploring the Youth Justice System: an introduction' (K523), a new course specifically for practitioners working within the youth justice system. It is a short, interactive and flexible induction course designed to provide a range of entry-level activities to the YJB’s National Qualifications Framework and benefits from being both material and web-based.
The course is suitable for all staff including administrators, sessional staff and volunteers. It provides initial induction training for effective practice in youth justice for new staff, as well as an update on current policy, practice and procedures for staff already in post.
The course also provides a ‘taster’ for staff contemplating entry into the Open University Youth Justice Programme.
