Foundation degrees are a government initiative aimed at meeting the needs of employers and employees. They are the equivalent of the first two years of an honours degree, worth 240 CAT points (transferable higher education credits) – 120 points at HE Level 1 (first year) and 120 points at HE Level 2. Students will be able to progress to an honours degree if they wish.
The foundation degree in youth justice developed by the Open University [opens in new window] has four over-arching aims:
- to provide students with the appropriate skills, values and understanding required to operate as an effective practitioner with children and young people who offend or who are at risk of offending.
- to provide students, through flexible learning routes, a range of educational experiences appropriate for Foundation Degree students.
- to provide suitable work-based experiences which will enable students to explore and evaluate their practice.
- to enable students to learn how they learn and how to continue with learning throughout their careers.
