Emerging practice is practice that looks ‘promising’ but which has yet to be evaluated. To meet our statutory duty to identify and promote ‘good practice’, we developed the Directory of Emerging Practice.
The Directory of Emerging Practice contains details of programmes, templates, processes and documents from across a range of practice themes. They are intended to provide a starting point for youth justice services, across the country, seeking to improve and adapt their practice without creating programmes or procedures from scratch. It also enables examples of practice to be shared nationally.
We have now extended the range of Directory of Emerging Practice to include submissions from the private sector as well as the voluntary and community sector, providing that they have been submitted by a youth offending team or secure establishment.
Submitting something to the directory
In order to keep the directory current, we need to collect and evaluate a constant flow of examples of emerging practice from YOTs and secure establishments. Those with details of programmes or resources that have been effective in work with young people, and that they are willing to share with other services, should fill in the emerging practice submission pro-forma [195Kb Word document; opens in new window] (eligibility criteria are included) and send it, along with the example, to directory@yjb.gov.uk.
The materials will then undergo a high level screening process.
If you would like more information, or would like to comment on the examples included in the directory please send an email to directory@yjb.gov.uk or call 020 7271 3163.
