Research into the prevalence of racially motivated offending and the provision of targeted interventions
The YJB has commissioned the Applied Criminology Centre (ACC) at the University of Huddersfield to carry out a study into racially motivated offending and the provision of targeted interventions.
What is the purpose of this study?
A number of events have taken place in recent years including the riots in Bradford in 2001, and the murder of Zahid Mubarak in 2000, which have made racially motivated offending a priority for the YJB. The research aims to find out more about the extent of racially motivated offending and what YOTs and secure establishments are doing about it. This will help the YJB to develop appropriate policy in this important area.
What does this study involve?
The ACC will shortly be sending an electronic survey to all YOTs and secure establishments across England and Wales in an attempt to ascertain the level of provision of services for racially motivated offenders (RMOs). The YJB is fully supportive of this research and would like all YOTs and secure establishments to take part (even if there is no specific provision in your YOT/secure establishment), as it is very important to have a comprehensive overview of provision in England and Wales.
What will happen to the results of the study?
The results of the study will be published in a report to the YJB, and other academic publications, during 2007/8. You will be able to read about the results in this published research.
