Courts and Orders
This area provides YOT practitioners, magistrates, the police, CPS and others working in courts with information relating to youth and crown courts and the orders that can be bestowed by them.
Click for guidance on all the relevant disposals that can be given to a young person. We also have information on managing demand for custody, including appropriate use of remand.
YOTs should view training materials for Youth Offender Panel volunteers, our Referral Order databases and Making it Count in Court, which provides practitioners with a framework for effective delivery in court.
A core document relating to YOTs' role in court is Key Elements of Effective Practice - Swift Administration of Justice.
Additionally, the National Standards for Youth Justice Services has guidelines for work in courts on page 23, court reports and Youth Offender Panels on page 39, and court-ordered interventions/disposals on page 45.
The Criminal Justice and Immigration Act

Parental Compensation Order pilot
Ten local authorities in areas piloting targeted youth support teams are beginning to pilot the delivery of Parental Compensation Orders.
These are civil orders requiring parents/guardians to pay compensation to a person affected by the taking of property or its loss or damage caused by a child under 10 in their care – an act which, if the child were 10 or over, would constitute a criminal offence or be deemed to be anti-social behaviour.
While the YJB envisages YOTs supporting restorative justice approaches required as part of a Parental Compensation Order, it does not see them as taking the lead in Parental Compensation Order applications for local authorities. However, joint guidance on Parental Compensation Orders has been produced by the Home Office and the Department for Education and Skills.
